SummerSlam 2011 Review

The PPV of the summer delivered exactly the way I wanted it to. With great matches and unexpected endings. This year’s SummerSlam is definitely up there with the other historical great SummerSlams.

Kofi Kingston, John Morrison & Rey Mysterio vs Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth & The Miz:

I didn’t mind the first match. It was quite expecting considering a few matches were said to be thrown on the card during the PPV. It was great seeing Morrison, Mysterio, Kofi, Del Rio, Truth & The Miz getting a spot on the card. Especially The Miz somebody who has dominated all the way to the top that gets tossed back to where he started. I wouldn’t say he’s wasted talented at this point. He’s still young and got plenty of years ahead of him. He’s got plenty of title reigns coming his way. Overall great 6 man tag match, definitely something you want to open a great PPV with

Sheamus vs Mark Henry:

Sheamus and Mark Henry was quite a slow match to begin with, but business picked up. Sheamus got a brutal beat down and I doubt that’s the end of it. This feud will most definitely continue, Although WWE are giving the spot light to Henry where does this leave Sheamus ?. I can see a possible Sheamus/Christian feud down the road. Somebody really needs to put Sheamus over. Despite the fact that he already is, getting a huge win from a top heel like Christian is something that’ll definitely get him over with the crowd

WWE Divas Championship: Kelly Kelly (c) vs Beth Phoenix:

As easy as I predicted Beth Phoenix to pick up the win. It was quite shocking to see Kelly Kelly still retain the title. I feel as if it’s a good thing that Kelly retained the title. Because it makes her feud with Beth grow a little more. Even if Beth picked up the win, the feud wouldn’t be balanced out properly it’d seem quite rushed. So maybe this feud will grow a little more before the title changes hands. Despite the bad outcome, it was good seeing women’s wrestling back how it use to be. Well sort of…

Daniel Bryan vs Wade Barrett:

The match I was looking forward to. Impressed me more then I expected, It’s always great seeing two different wrestling styles meet in the ring. Bryan like every other match delivered to perfection. And Barrett played a huge role in this match, bringing back the blazer, Barrett’s heel persona grew a little more. I enjoyed watching Barrett’s struggle to put Bryan down for the 3 count. I would say this was my favorite match on the card. From beginning to end, both men delivered, both men brought a lot of competition to the plate. Quite an unexpected win, It puzzled me because of Bryan being Smackdown’s MITB winner I thought he would stand taller in this match. This could be signs of a weak Daniel Bryan, hopefully this feud continues to a stipulation where the briefcase is on the line. Because quite frankly Bryan hasnt really convinced me he’s World Heavyweight Champion material. He might be a master in the ring but it’s the other qualities that paints the perfect picture of a champion. All the things that Barrett has, but that’s just my opinion…

World Heavyweight Championship Match: No Disqualification Match: Christian (c) vs Randy Orton:

The Orton/Christian match was the last match I could be bothered about. But surprisingly this match wasn’t that bad. It went on for quite some time, both men impressed me with their continuity in the match. It felt like this match told a story. I didn’t have much a problem with it. And it was also quite relieving to see Orton finally break the announce table. That must feel like a huge amount of accomplishment to him. And he dropped that RKO quite nicely. Overall solid match, nice outside and in ring wrestling, great use of weapons nothing too overused. A nice old fashioned no holds barred match. I don’t know whether this will continue or not. It just seems too dragged out and Christian can’t just stop hunting for the title. There needs to be something either brought into this feud or something to end it. Because this feud is just the same old dirty laundry.

WWE Championship Match: Champion vs Champion: CM Punk (c) vs John Cena (c) HHH (sp. Ref):

The match that I’m sure got the buy rates sky rocketing to the sky. Another match of the Cena-Punk saga. This time at SummerSlam. Last time these guys squared off in one of my favorite matches. A moment that defined me as a wrestling mark. A moment I will never forget. That was Money In The Bank. But speaking of SummerSlam, these two athletes gave the crowd what they wanted. And it started off great, Hunter as the ref didn’t seem bias at all. He seemed like a fair ref calling it down the middle. I quite liked the pace of the match. It picked up towards the middle. Solid wrestling from both men. I was in quite a shock seeing Punk pick up the win. And The Game not seeing Cena’s foot on the rope. I was hoping a restart to the match, but the ending didn’t feel right. I felt as if something was going to happen as a few things did. First off ‘Big Sex’y Kevin Nash jumps the rails and power bombs Punk. Not that it wasn’t normal it just was so unexpecting. I was in shock, and confusion. Then it appeared to be Del Rio cashing in. And what better way to do it. I enjoyed it ! & as much as I love Punk I couldn’t pull away from the fact that the ending wasnt predictable like serveral WWE PPVs have been recently. I loved how the ending left us with jaws dropped, it felt good. That’s what I want in every PPV. It’s what makes Raw worth watching. I couldn’t of booked this better myself. Great ending it made me think of plenty possible ideas to why Nash randomly appeared. It gave me a reaction and that’s what WWE wants us to have… a reaction. I’m sure if they get a reaction from everybody who’s watching, then they’ve done their job perfectly !

Great SummerSlam 8/10
